Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— Romans 5:12

The evidence is clear that everyone is born a sinner.  Even at the youngest age a child knows right from wrong.  When they do wrong, like steal a cookie when told not too, and are confronted by mom when she asks, “Did you take a cookie?”  The reply is invariably, “Not me!”

And as we age, if we haven’t come to Christ yet, our appetite for sin grows.  This is why the Bible spends a lot of time talking about sins we commit so everyone can recognize their failure and seek Jesus for forgiveness and salvation.

In the Old Testament the Ten Commandments list major sources of sin. (Exodus 20:3-17) The law lists many more (Deuteronomy 27:15-26) and Proverbs lists seven sins that God really hates. (Proverbs 6:16-19)

          The New Testament has a multitude of reminders of how sinful we really are.  They can be found in Mark 7:21-22; Romans 1:24-29, 13:13; 1 Corinthians 5:10-13, 6:9-10; Galatians 5:19-20; Ephesians 4:31, 5:3-5; 1 Timothy 1:9-10, 6:4-5; 2 Timothy 3:2-5; Titus 3:3; 1 Peter 2:1, 4:3-4; Jude 8, 16; Revelation 9:-20-21, 21:8, 22:15

John wrote that if we say we have no sin we are a liar and Christ isn’t in us.  But once we are saved John reminds us that sin no longer has a hold on us, and we can live a holy life if we abide in Christ. 1 John 1:6 – 2::2.  That is the good news of the gospel.  We have a Savior.

Prayer:  Dear Lord, thank you for saving me from a life of sin.  Help me to overcome temptation by looking toward you and abiding in you.  In Jesus’ name, amen.

* There is a website that conducted a search for Bible verses.  They compiled a list of the verses in order of the magnitude of hits they got in their search.  Some of these verses probably qualify as ‘people’s favorites’, while others might be on the list because they are some of the most important and most teachable words of God.
