CHRISTMAS GIFTS

Mother taught us the true meaning of Christmas at an early age. She always stressed our Savior’s birth and what it meant. However, being youngsters, we liked the other parts of Christmas time as well. We liked the gifts and the hubbub that accompanied them.

When Christmas came, my brother, Shockie, got his precious BB gun. I received my requested Betsy Wetsy doll. After I took her from under the tree, I put her in bed with me and fed her a bottle of water, pretending it was milk, of course. Shortly, I discovered a wet bed and a wet me; hence, I realized the reason for her name. Upset, I wished I had not asked for her. I decided I wouldn’t feed her anymore.

What a valuable lesson I learned that year. Sometimes when we get what we ask for, we soon find it isn’t really what we wanted. Even today, I sometimes seek things that are not in my best interest. I often ask the Lord for His will, not my own. I know His ways are so much higher and better.

Isaiah 55:9: For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. (NLT)

We thought material presents were so important as youngsters, but our parents knew the true treasure. They gave us the most valuable gift of all when they taught us about our wonderful Savior, Jesus Christ. Nothing can compare with Him. He keeps on giving year after year. I still enjoy other trimmings, but He remains the center of my Christmas.
