Topping the charts with another hit, the Sons of Korah are on a roll. This may be their biggest hit, spawning at least five worship songs and filling sermons for thousands of years. Traditional hymns, “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” by Martin Luther and “God is Our Refuge and Our Strength” are two of the more popular. Modern songs like “Psalm 46 (Lord of Hosts)” by Shane and Shane, “Be Still, Be Still, My Soul” and “Trouble Won’t Go” focus on select verses of this amazing Psalm.
Although not specifically quoted in the New Testament, Jesus taught the truths extolled in this song. Jesus is our rock; He is the chief cornerstone. We do not have to worry and tremble at events going on around us when we have the peace that passes all understanding living in us. Jesus calmed the seas, He raised the dead, He fed the thousands, made blind eyes see and deaf ears hear. There is nothing too hard for the Lord. Rest in that knowledge and you won’t be afraid when the winds of destruction blow your way. Rest in His arms and you won’t give in to the torments and temptations of the evil ones.
God will triumph over all our enemies. Verses 4 – 9 talks about His glorious return and the remainder of the song about He and heaven come to earth where He will reign with the saints of God. If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior and turned your life over to him then you will be counted among the saints.
These songs were written using Psalm 46. The first focuses on verses 1 and 2 and is an easy listen. The second is a newer version of God Is Our Refuge and Strength and you will not be able to not join in.
