Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?” John 1:38
Sometimes we go looking for it, and sometimes we are just shopping. When it comes to the eternal we should not just be shopping. Jesus wanted to know from these two disciples of John the Baptist which they were doing. They were looking for the one who held the answers. Andrew quickly realized who Jesus is.
40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus. John 1:40-42
John the Baptist knew Jesus was the Messiah. He told these two disciples who learned for themselves by talking with Jesus. We aren’t told who the other disciple was, but Andrew couldn’t wait to tell his brother, Peter, the Messiah had come.
Finding Jesus is the greatest moment in our lives. So great we want to share that moment with others. Andrew shared it with Peter. Philip shared it with Nathaniel. They all shared the good news with others. This is the model we all should follow.
However, some who attend church have never accepted the gift of salvation. They go looking, but not to attain. I’m reminded of an article I read years ago about a lady raised in the church. She never became a Christian and as an adult got into witchcraft. The story went on to say she had now turned to eastern mysticism. She was still looking for something she would never find in those religions.
Jesus shared the parable of the pearl of great price. The farmer found it, sold all he had and bought it. The pearl is Jesus, and He is worth it all. Buying into other religions will never satisfy the soul’s desire for peace and love. When we find Jesus we get peace, love, joy, and a whole lot more.
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him. No one finds the living water that satisfies our thirst until they find Him.
Contemplation: Am I still shopping or have I found Jesus? How invested in my relationship with Christ am I?
