49th MOST REFERENCED VERSE ON THE INTERNET*

By Mike Chaffin

For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

          Read the verse through three or four times.  What happens while you’re reading and shortly afterwards? For me I get a sense of calm, a peace in my soul, and assurance that God loves me.

          Isaiah wrote this about Jesus over 700 years before the incarnation.  In fact, there are over 100 prophecies in Isaiah about Jesus, his earthly ministry, and His second coming.  If you are looking for a good way to know more about prophecy and who Jesus is, a Bible study of all the prophecies in Isaiah would be a good place to start.

          Some names convey a first impression.  These names cause feelings. They show us the power and majesty of our eternal God, our Father, and our Savior.

          The prophecy tells us the Messiah will come as a baby boy.  He is the only begotten Son of God. He will one day rule over everything.  Currently he is in control and is seated at the right hand of God waiting for that day.

          The names listed convey meaning. Jesus is a miraculous wisdom giver who is the eternal God bringing peace to every believer and eventually peace on earth when He returns.

          Prophecy is a promise we can count on.  There is peace knowing Jesus is coming back one day but it is even more peaceful to know He is on the throne keeping watch over us.

Prayer:  Lord thank you for prophecy that helps us understand your majesty and plans.  While your second coming may be today, or it may be a future century we stand ready.  Help me to love your more fully and follow you more closely.  In Jesus’ name, amen.

 * There is a website that conducted a search for Bible verses.  They compiled a list of the verses in order of the magnitude of hits they got in their search.  Some of these verses probably qualify as ‘people’s favorites’, while others might be on the list because they are some of the most important and most teachable words of God.
